Questions With And Without Auxiliary Verbs

Questions in English language can be made with or without auxiliaries.
Questions with auxiliaries
To make questions in the present simple and past simple, we normally should use do/does (for present simple) and did (for past simple). These auxiliaries in questions have to be followed by the subject and a verb.
Question + Auxiliary + Subject + Verb
Examples:
-          What food do you like? NOT: What food you like?
-          Which DVD did he buy?
Questions without auxiliaries
When a question word (such us Who? What? Which? How many?) is the subject of the verb in the question, we don’t use an auxiliary
Examples:
-          Who (subject) called (verb) you last night on the phone?
-          Who drives your car? (of course I have a driver … my driver drives the car)
-          What happened after the earthquake?

Here are some exercises if you want to do more practice:

Past Continuous/Progressive

We usually use the Past Continuous (sometimes known as Past Progressive) to talk about activities that lasted for some time in the past. The actions can be interruped by something or can be happening at the same time.

Examples
  • The cat was sleeping on the sofa.
  • was eating the dinner when someone knocked at the door.
  • While he was watching TV, I was working hard.
  • was wondering if you could help me.

Past Simple - Regular & Irregular Verbs

To make the past tense form of most verbs (regular verbs) we add "ed" at the end.

Example:  I walked to the shops.

Irregular verbs are not that simple.  Sometimes it is helpful to use a dictionary when writing the past tense form of irregular verbs.

Example: We saw the dog at the park yesterday.

Changes these sentences so the verbs are in the past tense form.  The first sentence has been completed for you.

1.  I did all my homework in the study hall.        (do)
2.  She _________ of a better way to do it.      (think)
3.  Sam ________ us to lock the doors.           (remind)
4.  They ________ their names on the list.         (put)
5.  Who ________ my new shoes?                   (borrow)
6.  We never ________ his real name.              (know)

ANSWERS: 2 - thought, 3 - reminded, 4 - put, 5 - borrowed, 6 - knew
